The artist & the artworks
Who is Nicolas Claris?
Nicolas Claris is a French photographer whose personal body of work has developed alongside a long professional career. His work explores maritime landscapes as much as architecture, matter and the details of the world around him. The series shown on this site bring together his contemporary fine art photography.
What is fine art photography?
Fine art photography refers to an approach in which the image is conceived as a work of art in its own right, rather than as a simple documentary or commercial shot. Each print is produced with particular care given to print quality, paper choice and colour fidelity, in the spirit of a collector's piece.
What makes these prints unique?
Each print is an original work of art: a photograph taken by the artist, printed under their control, signed and numbered. The strictly limited edition, together with the certificate of authenticity, guarantees the rarity and traceability of every copy.
What does « limited edition of 5 copies » mean?
Each image is printed in only five copies in total, all formats and media combined. Each print bears its sequence number (for example 2/5). Once the five copies are sold, the image is never reprinted. This deliberate choice by the artist, stricter than the legal ceiling applicable to photographic works of art, ensures the value and rarity of each piece.
Does Nicolas Claris have other websites showing his work?
Yes, several websites present the different facets of his activity:
- art.claris.fr — The exhibitions of Nicolas and Romain Claris: photography and video shown in galleries (series Rouge, Noirs, On the Rocks, Fragments…), together with the critical texts for each exhibition.
- nicolas-claris.com — The photographer's personal site and biography: his career, his artistic approach and his complete body of work.
- shootings.claris.fr — Photo and video shoots for the yachting industry (shipyards, brokers, management companies, architects, designers), produced with Romain Claris.
- claris.fr — The Claris agency, in Bordeaux: photography, video and communication for yachting, architecture and wine.
The print & its quality
On what paper and with what technique are the prints produced?
Prints are produced on Epson Fine Art Cotton Smooth Bright 300g paper (or an equivalent high-quality paper), a premium cotton paper recognised for its softness, long-term stability and excellent rendering of colours and blacks. Printing is entrusted to a professional laboratory, under the artist's control.
What formats and sizes are available?
Several sizes are offered for each artwork. The available formats and their prices are shown directly on each image's page, at the moment of selection. Dimensions are given in centimetres and inches.
What is a margin and how should I choose it?
The margin is the strip of white paper left around the image. It makes framing easier and enhances the artwork. Several margin widths are offered when ordering, starting from a default 1 cm (0.39") margin. The choice depends on the desired look and the type of framing envisaged. If in doubt, discuss it with your framer before ordering.
Why does the site not offer framing?
As part of an eco-responsible approach, and in order to limit the impact and cost of shipping, prints are offered exclusively without framing or mounting. Each print includes by default a white margin of 1 cm (0.39"), adjustable at the time of ordering (see the question about margins above). This margin allows your local framer to help you choose framing or mounting perfectly suited to your interior.
Are the prints signed?
Yes. Each print is signed and numbered by the artist, making it an original work of art. The signature and copy number appear on the print, and the artwork comes with its certificate of authenticity.
What is the certificate of authenticity?
The certificate of authenticity is an official document that accompanies each print. It states the title of the work, the copy number, the format, the paper, the printing date and the author's name. It attests that the print is an original work and is an important document for its conservation and any future resale.
Ordering
Do I need to create an account to order?
Yes. Creating an account is required to place an order. It is used to record billing and delivery details, to track the order and to receive the invoice and the certificate of authenticity. The information provided is used solely to process the order.
How do I place an order, step by step?
The process is as follows: choose an image in a gallery, select the desired format and margin, add the artwork to the cart, then review the cart. After logging in or creating an account, you enter your details, then payment is made online securely. Once payment is confirmed, a summary email is sent.
Can I order several prints in a single order?
Yes. A single order can contain several different prints, and each print can be chosen in the format of your choice — identical or different from one print to another. Each artwork is added to the cart with its own format and margin, independently of the others. You can also order several copies of the same image, within the limit of the 5 copies of the edition; each copy then receives its own sequence number and certificate of authenticity. Packaging and shipping costs are calculated for the whole order.
Can I request a quote before buying?
Yes. You can request a quote for one or more artworks before completing a purchase. The request is made via the contact page, indicating the desired artworks and formats. A reply is then sent by email.
How do I preview an artwork in a setting and select it?
In a gallery: the star on the thumbnail adds the artwork to your selection. A white star means the artwork is not selected; a red star, that it is. Clicking a thumbnail opens the in-room preview.
“Enlarge view” button: enlarges the full in-room setting, taking into account the chosen format and margins. You can scroll through the gallery photos within the room image using the left / right arrows.
“Enlarge photo” button: opens the photograph alone, full size. You can scroll through the gallery photos and select / deselect each one.
All selection / deselection modes are synchronised: a selected artwork stays selected from one page to another, until the order is confirmed.
Price, payment & VAT
How are prices calculated? Are they excluding or including VAT?
The price of each artwork depends on the chosen paper format. The margin has no effect on the price: with or without a margin, the price is the same for a given paper format. Packaging and shipping costs are added according to the destination. The applicable VAT depends on the country and the customer's status; the breakdown (amount excluding tax, VAT, total) appears on the order summary and on the invoice.
Does VAT apply to my order?
Whether VAT applies depends on the delivery country and the customer's status:
- France (private individual or business): French VAT at the reduced rate of 5.5% applicable to works of art.
- European Union, private individual: French VAT as long as the European threshold is not exceeded, or the destination country's VAT beyond it.
- European Union, business with a valid intra-Community VAT number: VAT exemption (intra-Community supply), the customer accounting for the tax in their own country.
- Outside the European Union: VAT exemption as an export.
The exact scheme applied to the order appears on the invoice.
For deliveries outside the European Union, customs duties and import taxes may be applied by the destination country. Any such charges are payable by the recipient and are not included in the order price. Their amount depends on local regulations.
What payment methods are accepted?
Payment is made online by credit card or Apple Pay, via Stripe, a secure payment provider. Payment is made in full, at the time of ordering.
Is payment secure? Are my card details stored?
Yes, payment is processed by a specialised secure payment provider. Card details are entered directly within the provider's secure environment and are not stored by the site. Your card details therefore never pass through the merchant site's servers.
Shipping
Which countries do you ship to?
Deliveries are made in France, within the European Union and outside the European Union. Shipping costs are calculated according to the destination zone and shown before the order is confirmed.
What are the production and shipping times?
Each print is produced to order at the laboratory. The print is generally shipped within around 8 to 10 business days. An email with tracking information is sent at the time of shipping.
How much does shipping cost and how is the artwork packaged?
Shipping costs depend on the destination and are shown before payment. Prints are packaged with particular care, suited to the transport of works of art, in order to protect the paper and avoid any damage during transit. See in pictures how each print is carefully packaged.
What should I do if the parcel arrives damaged?
On receipt, it is important to check that the packaging has not been damaged. In the event of visible damage, you must make a reservation immediately with the carrier, with photographs of the damage, and report it by email to nicolas@nicolas-claris.com. Without a reservation made on receipt with the carrier and by email, a later claim will not be possible. Prints are shipped with insurance covering their value.
Are there customs duties outside the European Union?
For deliveries outside the European Union, customs duties and import taxes may be applied by the destination country. Any such charges are payable by the recipient and are not included in the order price. Their amount depends on local regulations.
After purchase
Can I cancel or return an order?
For private customers in France and the European Union, a 14-day right of withdrawal applies from the date of receipt. The artwork must be returned complete, in perfect condition, with its certificate of authenticity and in its original packaging. Return costs are payable by the customer. Detailed conditions appear in the terms and conditions of sale.
How is the invoice provided?
An invoice is issued for each order. Depending on the destination country, it is written in French or bilingually, which allows it to be used notably for customs formalities. It is sent to you as a PDF by email, together with the certificate of authenticity; the paper originals then reach you with the print.
How should I care for my print?
A fine art print should be handled with clean hands or gloves, by the edges, without touching the printed surface. It is recommended to frame it under glass to protect it from dust and humidity, and to keep it away from direct, prolonged sunlight. Kept in good conditions, the print retains its quality for a long time.
How can I contact Nicolas Claris?
